Well what an epic day, our biggest so far and a ride full of unforgettable highlights. We set out from Briancon at 7am in perfect riding weather. The group set a nice steady pace to the col du Lauteret summit where we stopped for coffee and baguettes, with amazing views of the massif des Ecrins most were reluctant to leave. From here we all took on the stunning 8km climb to the Galibier summit. For those who have never been, the best word to describe the setting is HUGE! You are surrounded and dwarfed by peaks in a scale that one never sees back home in Australia. The Galibier summit is remarkable and unforgettable.
From the summit, the group split to ride different combinations of the col de telegraphe and the Valloire side of the Galibier. Each member of this wonderful group of people should be rightfully proud of their achievements today. There is nothing quite like the intoxicating mix of exhaustion, euphoria and sensory overload that comes from cycling the high mountains of Europe. Bring on day five!
Tomorrow we head to Sestriere via Montgenevre, should be another stunning day.
